Do you hear the people sing?

I went to see Les Misérables yesterday. Even though I've spoilered myself pretty much about everything with listening to the music and having heard lots about it, it was my first time ever seeing that musical in one piece. What can I even say? It was worth the wait. I was blown away. It's all pain and misery and music and I LOVE IT.

The actors were all amazing, except for Helena Bonham Carter. I, just. I cannot stand to see her anymore and I am so fed up with her roles. They're all the same overly ridiculous, shrill and crazy women. Anne Hathaway, though! She deserves an Oscar just for her performance of "I Dreamed a Dream". It was so raw and painful and heart-breaking and UGH. You could see all her hopes shatter on screen. Oscar material, I say! Just like Redmayne's "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables".

*rolls around in pain*

I fell in love with pretty much all the characters (EPONINE! ENJOLRAS! MARIUS! GAVROCHE!), but the biggest surprise to me was Javert. Seriously. I expected him to be this really annoying antagonist, but then BAM. Right from the first second I was pretty much lost on him. Oops. Damn you, Russel Crowe! Also, can we please talk about how Javert was, really, really - I mean REALLY - obsessed with Jean Valjean? Like, really really? Like, "emotionally and sexually repressed" kind of obsessed? Yeah. I don't care if it's one-sided and unhealthy and fucked-up, because THAT'S EXACTLY THE POINT. Any relationship that fits the lyrics to Vermillion and Vermillion pt. 2 is pretty much an instant ship for me.

I also ship Marius/Enjolras, but fandom apparently mostly ships Enjolras/Grantaire? I have to admit, I had to google his name first because I seriously didn't notice him in the movie, but he's the guy who comes up the stairs to die together with Enjolras so I get why people might ship them. Maybe he's got more appearences in the book? (Which I kind of want to read now.)

New life goal: seeing Les Mis on stage. And now I'll be over at AO3, making my way through the Les Mis section.
