30 days fanfic meme - the rest

12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

Uhm, not that I can remember.

13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

I like both in their own way. Fanon has brought up wonderful interesting ideas and in some fandoms you have to work much more with what fans established (i.e. RPS). I do think that fanon can bring whole new point of views into the way you look at characters - it did to me with characters like, say, Petunia Dursley in Harry Potter, but I usually don't let my view get destroyed by it.

14 – Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

My standard rating is PG-13, sometimes this goes up to R, but that's about it and I feel perfectly fine with it. I have written NC-17 (i.e. porn), but it was always extremely hard for me to do so and I rarely felt comfortable with it. So I eventually gave up on it again.

15 – Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?

I think there need to be warnings for the big general things like: is there het, slash, femslash, will it be dark, violent, completely sugary, will there be sex etc., things that are generally considered as squicky (incest, bestiality, ..) and potentially triggery stuff (rape). Apart from that, I think it's pretty ridiculous to warn for everything in a fic, because you can't know what people will be upset about and you might spoil the entire story by certain warnings (character death, e.g.).
The weirdest warning I had to use? Huh ...

16 – Summaries – Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

I have to admit: I kind of dislike them. I know they're the most important thing to draw in readers, but I suck tremendously at summing up the core plot of a fic. It either sounds too dull or too exaggerated, so I mostly end up taking a quote that is significant enough to tell you something about the story.

17 – Titles – Are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

Titles are probably even harder than summaries. Sometimes, very rarely, they pop into my head and then they're just perfect, but most of the time I have to think or search quite long for a fitting one. Maybe I'm just a nitpick, but I think titles are important and have to be really, really good. I hardly do chapterfics anymore, but if I give them titles depends all on the fic's setup and whether it fits.

18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka "bunnies") from?

I know an evil young woman who likes to make innocent comments, knowing fully well what they will do to me and my brain. And once I'm infected, it's conversations with her that fuel the ideas and bring them to life. *ogles at [livejournal.com profile] louphoenix*
But yeah, apart from that I get the most inspiration just by dabbling in the fandom, reading, watching, getting more information. If it's the right fandom and draws me in enough, I'll start getting ideas - the only problem is I rarely write them down anymore.

19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

That depends. As I said, I rarely use ideas I have anymore. Generally, if it's an idea for a shorter fic and it really hits me, then I try to write it down asap. Plot bunnies have become so fleeting and if I'm in the mood for writing then I need to indulge in it. If it's something longer, then I write it down for further use.

20 – Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

Uhm, I can't remember a situation when it happened that way, but I can imagine very well being inspired by other people's fic and then wanting to do something similar. Fanart not so much - I rarely come across some and it could never have the impact on me that words have.

21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

I generally don't do sequels for the same reason that I don't do multi-chapter fics anymore: I utterly lack the perseverance to see it through. Also, most of the times I finish a fic I don't feel like there is more to tell about it than I already did. I guess the only sequels I wrote in the past few years were all the Ultraverse parts after the first one - which was technically a oneshot, I never intended to write more about it.

22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

I haven't participated in any fest or Big Bang, mostly because there aren't many (or none at all) in German fandom. Which is sad, because even though I'm not the most persistent writer I'd love to try the challenge of writing a long fic for a fest and I could never do that in English as much as I love the language.

23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

I used to post in my journal and then crosspost to fitting communities, but now I just keep to my own fic-journal.

24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

Uhm, I don't bother with betas anymore lately because I write too little too seldom. Back then, I tried to use one per fic and I was lucky to even find that one beta.
I used to have some who read my fic and just said "Yeah, nice, keep writing." with no feedback whatsoever, let alone correction of any grammar or style. :/ So that would be my beta horror story. My dream story? When I finally met people who gave me useful constructive feedback to improve my stories. :D

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

Music? All the freaking time. I put in all the soundtracks I think may fit and hope it gets me into the right mood. Sometimes I really do need it and it works. Sometimes I just try to fool myself it'll get me to write, but a bit of silence and concentration would be much better. It just depends.

26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

Ok, here's my confession: I hate research. Maybe that's why I only get into fadoms that are easy to grasp and don't need much knowledge other than that of canon facts. And I don't think I ever had to research something really odd. Things I did research are and found unusual: Albanian mafia, Asgardian lore (Asgard as in Marvel!Asgard), how many people fit onto an Enterprise, loads of facts about hooligans and a children's playground.

27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

I prefer to write on the computer. My drafts are usually a cluttered mess of notes and stray sentences, I have the tendency to abandon entire paragraphs to start writing on new ones, I change the order of sentences and paragraphs about as often as I open the document. Ok, let's rephrase that: I need to write on the computer. I can write by hand, but sooner or later there's a lot of scratching through and rephrasing, and on paper, that just gets unreadable after a while. So, per default, my favourite place to write is in front of my computer.
I do like to write by hand and on paper, though, especially when you get hit by an idea and just can start writing on the spot. It's a nice feeling to have your writing everywhere with you.

28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

Does working out crazy ideas with [livejournal.com profile] louphoenix count? Otherwise, no.

29 – What is your current project or projects?

Uhm, so there's this children's playground. And it all evolves around it. I don't want to talk much about it because I may never write it down, but it's an AU. A very, very cracky AU.

30 – Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

Can I say Ultraverse in general? Because I do like it, quite a lot. It started out as a spontaneous oneshot and then sort of developed a life of its own, with this crazy, complicated relationship between the two characters. And I like that it's not bound by an overall plot (makes it that much easier to write every once in a while), but still makes sense as a whole.

XD

Kannst das Meme ja auch machen - wäre gespannt, was du da alles schreibst. ;)
