SPN: thoughts on the characters in general
I finally got around to watch the end of season 1 (which was abso-fuckin'-lutely gripping and exciting and mean, and omg, Dean was so awesome) and somehow, my mind is full with thoughts on the characters, their relationships and the way they're depicted in the show.
So here alittle huge rambling. I don't know whether it makes any sense, but it needed to get out.
Dean. Oh, Dean. So much win and love.
I think I've been a Dean-fangirl since the very first episode. However, watching 22 episodes filled with:
- loads of grins
- smiles
- funny lines
- "omg that's so awww" lines
- quirky behaviour
- bravery in dangerous situations
- trying to win the acceptance of his father
- protecting Sammy
...and not to forget:
- the sexiest lips on this planet
... all of this made me fall so effing hard for him that it's not nice anymore. *sighs*
And not only is Dean a character worthy of lots of fangirling, he's also deep. Very much, at that.
He may be cocky when it's only about himself, but he's scared shitless when faced with the possibility of losing Sam and/or his dad. He always gives off the air of someone who is free and independent, but is so incredibly dependent on his father's acceptance and their family's welfare it's almost ridiculous.
Almost. Because nothing Dean does is ridiculous. So much fear, worry, repression and lost dreams beneath the surface that it hurts to think about it. He is a wonderful character, because he has so many flaws and weaknesses.
Sam, on the other hand...
I love Sam. How could I not? He's lovely and sweet and very much huggable. And I love him, because Dean loves him.
Yet, I never really managed to get a grasp of who he is and what his personality is like. I mean, we get to see him in every darn episode of this show and it's like we never really get to know anything about him.
Honestly. What do we know?
Sam is geeky College-boy. Sam is the sensitive one. Sam is also the reasonable one - except when it comes to killing that demon, then he's just blind and plainly obsessed. Sam has mysterious visions and powers and gets (slightly overacted) migraine-fits because of them. Oh, and we can't forget about teh survivor's guilt.
Is there more? If so, I must be either blind or somehow have missed it, because I just fail to see it.
Of course, there are certain character traits that shine through in several episodes (the persistance, the stubbornness, the courage, the love that he very clearly has for his family even though it seems otherwise at times). Yet, his characterization stays rather vague in my eyes. Almost flat in comparison to Dean about whom we learn so much more (his taste in music, for example, or that he's afraid of flying on a plane). It's kind of disappointing, actually, and I really hope this will change in season 2.
Okay, what else?
Oh, right: Daddy Winchester. I liiiike Daddy Winchester. Yis.
I don't like the way he expects his sons to obey him in an instant, because people ordering other people around - especially when it's parents with their children - make me fucking aggressive. (Been having this with my father ever since I can think and seriously, how can Dean always put up with it like that? *shakes her head*)
I do like John as a person, however. I think he's a very complex and interesting character, and at least he has a reason for his behaviour. He cares about his sons - a lot, for that matter - and just wants to keep them safe. (Besides, he does look quite good for his age... *coughs*)
Well, actually, I love the entire Winchester family. (Yes, Mary, too. She seemed to be a great woman judging from what you could see of her in episode 9.)
I love the complexity of the relationship between Dean, Sam and John, let alone the relationships they have among each other (whether these are sexual or not is up to you *winks*).
Dean and John, for example: now, that's what I would call a twisted father-and-son-relationship. They care so much about each other - they would die for each other - and yet, there's just so much wrong about the way they handle this. Sam and John: almost the same thing here, only with different settings since Sam likes to be rebellious whereas Dean is the obeying type.
The most harmonic relationship within this family is probably that of Dean and Sam - and even between these two linger tons of unsaid things.
So, basically, what I've been babbling about in this post is: I love this show for the characters. Not for the overall plot (which is fairly okay), neither for the episode plots (which are very straightforward and lack in depth most of the time) and sure as hell not for the special effects (which are simply lol sometimes). I love it because of the characters, but the characters, I do love like whoa.
[/massive pointless rambling]
Oh, and just one more random, absolutely silly thought: am I the only one who thinks "Winchester" is about the coolest name to have on Earth? It just rolls perfectly off your tongue, sounds nice when spoken and looks cool when written.
(Yes, I have kind of a fetish for nice-sounding words and yes, I'm weird. XD)
ETA: OH. MY. GOD. I just watched the first episode of season 2 and I'm fucking bawling like a baby. The ending of season 1 is just "WTF?!", but this, this is breaking my heart. *goes back to crying and watching ep 2*
