I'm back from watching the Eagle and I can't lie: I liked it. It was a decent enough movie, but what made it worthwhile was definitely the UST and slashy subtext. My companion who went to see it with me described it rather as a very intense friendship. While I agree on the intense, I'd say it was more on the "I hate you, I like you, I love you, I want to fuck you" side of things.

The first half of the movie is rather close to the book storywise except for a few changes (like the hate-relationship between Marcus and Esca, and a missing Cottia and Cub :/), but when they get to the part where Marcus' and Esca's roles are reversed, more and more changes come up. Personally, I like the movie all the more for those changes (although the book makes much more sense) and if only to see Channing Tatum as a disgruntled suffering "slave". Because, oh, he looks good while suffering stoically, and suffer, he does a lot. A lot. (You can say about Channing Tatum's acting what you want, but I thought he was quite fitting for the job. He does look great in uniform and the constant stoic look worked well with the role. And, yes, he is some rather nice eyecandy as well as Jamie Bell.)

Slash and fangirl goggles set aside, the movie was nice. Okay. A little mediocre and full of heavy grunting, manly honour and a little too much horseback riding through the rain. The last 5 minutes were hilariously bad, cheesy dialogue and everything, although it is all made up for with the last shot of Marcus and Esca grinning at each other and walking away into the sunset. Person who saw the movie with me: "Well, they should have held hands, that would have made it perfect." I can't agree more.

Out of 5 stars: 3.5 stars for the movie, 4 stars for the subtext.

Now, where is the fic?

ETA: There's a great comparison between book and movie which I have pretty much to agree on: the book makes more sense, but the movie has so many great things that are not in the book, and so I kind of like both.

ETA 2: I just need to say that I really, really, really loved Jamie Bell's Esca. He made him grave and angry and multi-layered and so believable. With Esca being a bit in the background in the book (I was constantly waiting for dialogue that wasn't coming), it was very much needed.

Also, Roman war formations (testudo!) are strangely awesome and sexy.
