(Dis-)Claimer: All the drabbles are fanfiction to various books, musicals, real persons, TV shows, etc. which I don't own. I don't claim to know anything about any real persons that were used as characters. Not making any money with this.

The Eagle of the Ninth (movie!verse). Marcus/Esca, slash.

I didn't wanna hurt you, but you're pretty when you cry.
(Pretty when you cry, VAST)

12. Fantasy

He makes his choice the moment they meet the Seal people, but that doesn't keep his thoughts from wandering. Some part of him – the part that burns with past grudges and never forgets – doesn't care that he would give his life for Marcus should they be discovered.

He shrugs when they force Marcus to sleep in the rain, tries to appear indifferent when he offers Marcus' throat to the prince. But his thoughts keep reeling, his stomach lurching, his fingers prickling with power. And at night, a voice keeps whispering: I wish we could stay like this forever.

The Eagle of the Ninth (movie!verse). Marcus, Esca.
Marcus and Esca after Guern reveals Esca knew more about the Eagle than he let on.

15. Storm

They saddle the horses in silence. He keeps throwing glances at Marcus, not knowing how he'll react. The Centurion stays stoic, though, ever the perfect Roman. Far in the north, dark masses of clouds tower up in the sky.

„We might be riding right into a storm,“ Esca says.

Marcus looks up at that, not in the direction Esca points to but right at him. There's … something in his eyes, and it's not anger. Not only. „I don't care.“

For the first time in weeks, Esca feels not as justified about keeping quiet as he did before.

Glee. Jesse/Rachel.
Rachel loves strawberry-flavoured ice-cream.

16. Strawberries

Rachel loves strawberry-flavoured ice-cream.

Jesse doesn't know why of all the things to remember about Rachel Berry his mind suddenly chooses this one. Among her many caprices it wasn't the most remarkable, either.

But as he enters a café in LA – arm around Jennifer (his new girlfriend-of-the-week) – it's this he must think of: their first date and Rachel making her pick with the certainty she made all her choices. Strawberry, she said, and maybe it wasn't the flavour, after all, but her wide, adoring smile that was so memorable about it.

Jennifer doesn't like strawberries. She picks vanilla.

The Eagle of the Ninth (movie!verse). Marcus, Esca, 300 words.
Marcus is exercising with his old weapon. Takes place sometime after Marcus' sugery.

17. Weapon

The Gladius* is still in perfect condition, the blade freshly cleaned and oiled – no doubt by the Centurion himself. Marcus looks at it as if it once held the answer to all his questions (and maybe, Esca thinks, it did). Eventually, he starts swinging the blade, tentative at first but growing more confident with every stroke.

His movements are experienced. Esca has no doubt they could be deadly in a real fight, under the right circumstances. It's too early, though, and the leg too weak. Marcus makes a sidestep, his leg gives way and almost causes him to stumble to the ground. Esca inhales sharply, quietly so, but it's enough to make his master realise he's been watching the entire time.

„Ah,“ Marcus says, eyes wide and breathing heavy, and his surprise reminds Esca of a deer right before the spear hits home. Esca would like to say something – anything – but the words are stuck in his throat and he can only stare. The Centurion looks right back at him, various undefined emotions washing over his face.

„Your uncle wants to speak with you,“ Esca finally blurts out. Then, without really knowing why: „I'm sorry.“

„What for?“ The smile on Marcus' face is tired and – sad, Esca realises. It angers him, somehow. Because Marcus is right (there is nothing he should feel sorry for) and he was never one to hand out apologies lightly. So he just stands there, jaws clenched and meeting Marcus' gaze stubbornly.

„I'll be right there,“ Marcus says at last, nodding at him in dismissal.

Esca bows and leaves, but he takes the picture of Marcus and his gladius with him in his mind. Although he tries to, it's something he won't forget for a long time.

(*I tried to find out which weapon a Centurion had, but I figured a gladius should be fine, right? Right?)

The Eagle of the Ninth (movie!verse).
Marcus/Esca, slash.
Trust and hate and everything inbetween.

28. Writer's choice: Faith

Marcus is as proud and righteous as a Roman can get, and Esca dislikes him for it. Marcus can also be blindly trusting, and it's this Esca hates him for. Oh, his master isn't stupid, but he seems to have a faith in Esca he probably couldn't explain himself.

Esca doesn't want the trust nor the faith. He could murder his master in his sleep and no one would care, not here in the middle of nowhere. He keeps telling himself this, remembers the stories his father told him, but the truth is: he would care, and way too much.
