ayascytheI had my French oral examination today. It went pretty well, despite me being rather hectic and confused at times. Now that it's over, I'm really going to miss this lecture. It was fun, relaxed and everyone was nice and got along. Hopefully the advanced French course will come to pass this summer. *crosses fingers*

Wicked - The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
(AKA: The most famous Wizard of Oz fanfiction on this planet)
When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum's classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?
Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.
I admit, I'm a bit torn about this book. I got interested in it through the musical, which I got interested in through several references in Glee (my mind is a strange place with strange thinking) and really wanted to read it because the premise sounded awesome.
It did start out great, then slacked off somewhere in the middle of the novel after losing focus of its actual main character. (The book is mostly told in other people's POV, not Elphaba's, hence there's often straying away from the main plot.) I'm on the last quarter of the novel now and it's become more interesting again. I'm curious how the ending will turn out - despite or maybe just because it's already a fact that the Witch will die.
So many people seem to hate this book and I can totally see why. The writing, while mostly charming, is sometimes dry and emotionless, the narration not always the best and - let's face it: it could've been done better. But. I'm reallya lot a little in love with Elphaba's character, the way she changes and, as I already mentioned, I adore her name. So just for the sake of introducing me to this wonderful character, reading "Wicked" is worthwhile.
