FanLib - anyone able to enlighten me?!

ayascytheStumbled across several posts with FanLib discussion today and as far as I can tell, this seems to be a big topic at the moment.
So... Fans being indignant. Fans discussing about this. But... what is the actual problem?! *feels kind of clueless and stupid*
Okay, FanLib seems to make money off putting fanfiction from various authors on their site. However, reading fic there seems to be for free, so I don't see how this is working.
Maybe it's my lack of knowledge of how internet sites actually work, maybe the fact that I was just skimming the meta-posts (yeah, I'm lazy - sue me :P) or I'm simply too dumb or lacking English skills. But I just don't get it.
Anyone willing and able to clear this up for me?
